A significant step toward strengthening youth sports development in the Philippines took place as the Wrestling Association of the Philippines (WAP) met with the Department of Education (DepEd) to align on a shared vision for introducing and expanding wrestling programs across public schools. The discussion centered on building a sustainable, safe, and values-driven wrestling ecosystem that will benefit not only local clubs but, more importantly, Filipino youth nationwide.
The meeting highlighted a collaborative direction for grassroots wrestling development, with DepEd expressing strong openness and full support for implementing school-based programs. Both organizations emphasized the importance of creating structured pathways for young athletes—from introductory school clubs to broader competitive and development opportunities. This initiative represents a long-term commitment to integrating wrestling into the educational environment as a tool for discipline, character-building, and holistic growth.
A Clear Development Pathway for Student-Athletes
One of the key focuses of the meeting was establishing age-appropriate programs that address different stages of youth development. For the Palarong Pambansa pipeline, the primary target category will be high school athletes aged 14–17, ensuring that students in this bracket receive structured training and competitive exposure aligned with national standards.
At the same time, a separate foundational program will be designed for elementary students aged 10 and below. This initiative aims to introduce wrestling through movement-based learning and fundamental athletic skills, opening a new developmental market and creating an early pathway into the sport. By engaging students at a younger age, the program seeks to nurture confidence, coordination, discipline, and respect—core values that extend beyond the wrestling mat.
Introducing Safe and Values-Based Youth Programs
To support the rollout of grassroots wrestling in schools, WAP will submit a formal proposal to DepEd outlining specific youth-centered initiatives, including:
-
Wrestling for Fun – A non-competitive, introductory program designed to make wrestling accessible and enjoyable for beginners.
-
FUNdamentals Program – A structured curriculum focusing on movement skills, discipline, safety, and basic wrestling education for young learners.
These programs aim to demonstrate that wrestling can be taught in a safe, educational, and engaging environment that aligns with DepEd’s standards for student welfare and development.
A marketing video is also set to be produced to support the pilot club program. This video will showcase Filipino children enjoying wrestling while learning discipline, movement, and foundational skills. Its purpose is to present wrestling as a safe, fun, and educational activity for schools and communities, helping build awareness and confidence among parents, educators, and stakeholders.
Training, Standards, and Sustainable Growth
Beyond student programs, the discussion also covered the need for seminars and training workshops to equip teachers, coaches, and program facilitators with the proper knowledge and tools. Clarifications on budget allocation and program management will be addressed as both organizations work toward a sustainable implementation model.
To ensure quality and safety, schools intending to hire trainers from outside DepEd will be required to engage coaches with valid WAP licenses. This requirement guarantees that all trainers meet recognized standards in coaching qualifications, athlete safety, and educational delivery—ensuring that wrestling programs maintain professionalism and consistency nationwide.
A Stronger Future for Youth Wrestling
The collaboration between WAP and DepEd signals a promising future for wrestling in Philippine schools. With strong institutional support and a shared commitment to athlete welfare, education, and long-term growth, the initiative aims to build a structured and inclusive pathway for young Filipinos to discover and excel in the sport.
More than just expanding local clubs, this partnership represents a nationwide effort to empower youth through wrestling—instilling discipline, resilience, and values that shape not only better athletes, but better individuals. As planning moves forward and pilot programs begin to take shape, WAP remains committed to working hand-in-hand with DepEd to build a safe, sustainable, and inspiring wrestling program for the next generation.
